Hong Kong- July 2007 - InterContinental Grand Stanford Hong Kong has become the first hotel in Hong Kong to install a new hybrid fuel system for hot water and steam which will cut carbon dioxide
emissions equivalent to taking 70 cars a year off the road.
The new system will also reduce the temperatures around the hotel by up to 2°C while also complying with the Hong Kong government's
Blue Sky Campaign.
InterContinental Grand Stanford Hong Kong Green Policy
InterContinental Grand Stanford is an early pioneer in Hong Kong of green management practices in the hospitality industry. Since 1998, when green was unfashionable or thought undo-able by a hotel in an urban environment, InterContinental Grand Stanford has initiated a stream of initiatives that proves green goes hand in hand with good business. It also became the first Hong Kong hotel to achieve ISO14001 for environmental protection in 2000.
Its policies and projects takes a 360 degree approach that encompasses management, staff and the community to provide environmentally-friendly accommodation and dining in a modern 21st century
urban environment.
Today, it's new hybrid electric plant, a citywide first, is being watched by at least 10 other hotels in Hong Kong who aim to follow suit.
The aging conventional diesel fuel boiler plant is notorious for its poor fuel efficiencies. Since its operation began a quarter of a century ago, the system is showing its age with maintenance problems, environmental unfriendly issues and low plant efficiency.
Indeed, one report by Sustainable Travel International indicates that every day you stay in a hotel means you might burn enough fossil fuels to release 33 pounds of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.
Technical Specifications
The old conventional diesel fuel boiler plant consisted of 3 x 2,400 kW fired tube packaged steam boilers for the laundry, kitchens and 578 guestrooms.
- The new electric hybrid plant consists of 4 x 375 kW electric steam boilers for steam and 8 x 70 kW electric water cooled heat pumps for hot water.
- Upgraded 3 of the 1,500kVA oil-filled transformers to 3 sets of 2,000 kVA gas-filled SF6 transformers.
- The overall efficiency of the old conventional diesel fuel boiler steam plant was about 50~60% while the newly installed electric hybrid plant is 95% efficient for steam generation by electric steam boiler.
Environmental Benefits
- Unburnt fuel particles are no longer emitted which would have affected the hotel's swimming pool and also entered fresh air intakes into the hotel. No more environmental issues of flue gas exhaust associated with the maintenance problems of an aging diesel fuel steam boiler plant
- Potentially reduce temperature around the hotel by at least 1oC
- Approximately 4.3 million cubic feet of CO2 no longer being emitted annually - equal to taking 70 cars off the road every year or the equivalent 500 trees living a full life.
Peter Pollmeier, General Manager said: "The new electric hybrid plant demonstrates our commitment to the environment. We believe in putting investment into our words and this will help us to reduce our carbon foot print on the environment."
"We are conscious that travelers and companies are putting sustainable travel and environmental concerns on the agenda and indeed we have been committed to going and being green for almost a decade now."
"The new plant will require less maintenance which will allow us to enhance our service to our guests and it will of course generate savings due to improved energy performance."
"The biggest winner is the environment and the local community," he added.
